How to Choose the Best Hockey Stick Tape for Your Game

By Best Dam Tape ·

What is the best hockey stick tape for you?

The best hockey stick tape fits the part of the stick you're wrapping, feels comfortable in use, and stays in place through your skate. Start with cloth tape for the blade. For the handle, choose a knob and grip setup that feels right with your hockey gloves on.

Your tape job has one assignment: let you forget about it once the puck drops.

Start with the blade or the handle

A blade wrap and a handle wrap solve different problems. On the blade, you're choosing the surface that contacts the puck. At the top of the stick, you're building something your glove can hold comfortably.

Cloth tape can serve both purposes. Purpose-made grip wraps are another handle option, but check how the specific product is intended to be used. Clear shin tape belongs with your socks and shin guards, not in your blade-taping routine.

Choose a width you can wrap cleanly

A standard-width roll gives you room to work around the blade's shape. A wider roll covers more surface with each pass, but it still needs smooth application. The goal is an even wrap without gaps, bunching, or loose edges.

If you're changing widths, keep the rest of your routine the same for the first practice. Changing width, overlap, coverage, and wax all at once makes it hard to tell what you actually prefer.

Pick the color you'll enjoy using

White tape makes dark puck marks easy to see. Black gives the blade a darker, more uniform appearance. Choose the look and visual contrast you prefer, then judge the tape by how it feels and holds up.

Test the grip with your gloves on

A knob that feels perfect in your bare hand may feel bulky inside a glove. Hold the stick in your normal playing position, slide your hand along the intended grip area, and check whether the knob catches comfortably.

Start with a modest build. You can add another layer more easily than you can ignore a grip you dislike for an entire game.

Buy a small amount before committing to a case

Try the setup at practice. Afterward, note whether the edges lifted, the wrap bunched, or the handle felt uncomfortable. Keep your notes simple: what worked, what didn't, and what you'll change next time.

Once you like the setup, compare multipack pricing. A larger order makes sense when you know you'll use it.
