Cloth hockey tape can build a handle grip and cover a stick blade. Specialty grip tape is designed primarily for the handle, with texture and stretch that vary by product. Choose by intended use and how the finished grip feels inside your glove.
The name can be confusing: players sometimes call any handle tape “grip tape.” Check the label before buying. A stretchy handle wrap, ordinary cloth stick tape and clear shin tape are different products.
Compare the job, not just the label
| Question | Cloth stick tape | Specialty grip tape |
|---|---|---|
| Where does it belong? | Blade or handle, depending on the product | Usually the handle; follow its instructions |
| How is the grip shaped? | Build layers and a knob to your preference | Often used as a textured outer wrap |
| Does it stretch? | Do not assume it behaves like stretch grip tape | Some versions stretch; others do not |
| What should you compare? | Finished thickness, texture and hold | The same factors, plus product-specific application |
When cloth tape makes sense
Cloth is a straightforward choice when you want one type of roll for blade work and a traditional handle setup. You can vary the knob size and the amount of shaft you cover. Start with less buildup, put your glove on and add material only where it improves comfort.
A large knob is not automatically more secure or more comfortable. If it forces your hand into an awkward position, rebuilding it is more useful than adding another layer.
When to try a specialty grip wrap
A purpose-made grip wrap is worth considering if you want a different texture or a softer outer surface. Read the manufacturer's instructions: products differ in stretch, adhesive and whether they are intended to wrap over an existing base.
Do not choose solely from the feel of an unused roll. The real comparison is the completed handle in your playing gloves, with normal hand movement.
A simple fit check
- Inspect the stick's end cap and follow the stick manufacturer's guidance before taping.
- Build a modest knob and grip area.
- Put on your gloves and move your top hand through normal stickhandling positions.
- Check for a pressure point, excess bulk or a surface that catches when you want to reposition.
- After practice, inspect the wrap and glove palm for wear.
Can grip tape go on the blade?
Only use a product on the blade if its maker specifies that use. Handle wraps are not automatically substitutes for cloth blade tape. Clear shin tape belongs with shin guards and socks, not as your default blade or handle wrap.
Build the setup around your hands
For a traditional cloth setup, start with Best Dam white cloth tape or black cloth tape. Our blade and knob guide covers the basic sequence. If you are still sorting out tape types, read clear versus cloth tape.
